Pierre "Hudson" Lejeune, musician

These days, Pierre Lejeune is the lead singer/guitarist of a band called Hudson. And tomorrow ? Well the band existed in the past, paused, is now back to explode our ears... So we don’t care about tomorrow !

In truth, Pierre is somehow the James Dean of the present times. He radiates with streams of melancholy, makes you feel like there’s no future. His personality is both deep and juvenile, a little bit as if someone had tried to mix water and air together.

His music is just like him, intimate, sensitive and strange. Listen to his solo project « Oslo Deadrash Project » somewhere between pop and despair.

Now, back to the questions he answered.  I think he was taken by surprise and quite amused. Let’s dive into his universe.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When did you start playing music ?

I’ve always been drawn to instruments and melodies when I was a child. Round 10, my father showed me 3 or 4 basic guitar riffs. I never really stopped leaning on my own ever since

Could you describe yourself in 4/5 words ?

Tall, skinny, misanthrope, unreasonable

What are your main influences ? Where do you draw your creativity from ?

From the pop melodies of the Beatles and the Beach Boys for the great classic. But mainly music from the very rich area of the 90ies, from the Pixies to Nirvana or Sonic Youth and trough The Posies, Smashing Pumpkins or Sunny Day Real Estate

What are the 3 things you couldn’t do without ?

Music, coffee, cream (the one you put in coffee)

What part of your art do you like best ? (reflexion, preparation, creation, transmission, etc…)

Reflexion and preparation are the most exciting moments for me because it’s a moment of total freedom. Then I like the creation times to translate the images in my head and imagine a project/album as a whole. It’s a job that takes a lot of introspection and I really like that. Afterwards, the joy of sharing it on stage or to hear my songs on the radio is uplifting of course. But this part is not the engine of it all.

What do you like to do when you do not play music ?

I love to work on everything that’s around music. I mean graphics, logos, flyers, website. I try to do most of the job myself, just like I do with music. Also, I love to discover other music or new films. And I spend time with my relatives and...  I sleep !

What are you most proud of so far ? What’s the most important thing you’ve accomplished  ?

I’m proud of “headpixel data”, an album made with an organ in the frame of my other project “Oslo Deathtrash Project”. It was my first album out and up to this day, it sounds like no other. Nevertheless, I think I haven’t done something important and that all is still to be done.

Is there a message or a goal in your art ?

No. But I hope my music casts a certain form of melancholy regarding the world that surrounds us. And also, some nonconformism.

What’s making you go on ? What’s keeping you motivated ?

Music is my means of expression, just like a painter paints because he needs to. And it stops on the day of his death. Or the day he loses all inspiration...

What’s your biggest regret or main concern?

I haven’t always made the right choices at the right time but that’s what makes us what we are afterall. I think more and more that I should live with no regrets.

What’s your next project ? Your next challenge ?

I’ve always had different projects running. Hudson is the most “rock” side of my work. But I’ve always loved to imagine more pop or electronic, quieter or wilder projects which thread would be the songs. Sometimes, I’ve thought of grouping all these ideas in the same project ( a bit like Radiohead with different styles in the same album). But in the end, I prefer to add up different projects. This way I really have the feeling to express myself and stay free. However, I do realize it’s impossible to focus on 10 projects at the same time. Consequently, some projects are permanently on stand-by. I still have the desire to do a real “solo” project with all the means and all the time it takes. For now, I’d really love to write a totally acoustic album, a bit like Dylan or Cash. It could be called : Peter And The Ghost or Peter Dead (And The Infinite Fiasco).

On a scale of 1 to 10, how happy are you these days ?

6 out of 10. I really feel much better ! haha
